hridayani vyadarayat। nabhas cha prithivim chaiva tumulo ’bhyanunadayan॥ 1.19 ॥ |
And the terrible sound, echoing through heaven & the earth, it rent & shattered the hearts of the sons of Dhritarashtra.
atha vyavasthitan drishtva
dhartarastran kapi-dhvajah:। pravrtte shastra-sampate dhanur udyamya pandavah:॥ 1.20 ॥ |
Now O lord of the earth, seeing your sons arrayed against him and prepared to shoot his arrows, Arjuna, the son of Pandu, seated in the chariot bearing the flag marked with Hanuman, took up his bow and prepared to shoot his arrows.

hrishikesham tada vakyam idam aha mahi-pate। senayor ubhayor madhye ratham sthapaya me ’cyuta॥1.21 ॥ yavad etan nirikse ’ham yoddhu-kaman avasthitan। kair maya saha yoddhavyam asmin rana-samudyame॥ 1.22 ॥ |
Arjuna said: O lord of the earth, after looking at the sons of Dhritarashtra drawn in military battle, Arjuna then spoke to Sri Krishna these words. O infallible one, please take my chariot between the two armies so that I can see those present here, who desire to fight, and with whom I have to fight.
yotsyamanan avekse ’ham ya ete ’tra samagatah:। dhartarastrasya durbuddher yuddhe priya-cikirsavah:॥ 1.23 ॥ |
I shall scan the well-wishers in this war of evil-minded Duryodhana, who have come here to fight.

evam ukto hrsikeso gudakesena bharata। senayor ubhayor madhye sthapayitva rathottamam॥ 1.24 ॥ bhisma-drona-pramukhatah sarvesam cha mahi-ksitam। uvacha partha pasyaitan samavetan kurun iti॥ 1.25 ॥ |
Sanjaya said:O king, thus been addressed by Arjuna, Sri Krishna placed the magnificent chariot in the midst of the armies of both parties. In front of Bhishma, Drona and all the other kings, the Sri Krishna said, Behold, Arjuna, all the Kauravas assembled here.
